The necessity for multiphoton processes in the 193-nm photochemistry of sulphuric acid aerosols

چکیده
The observation, that absorption of light by concentrated sulphuric acid at wavelengths near 193 nm apparently tends to zero as the acid is progressively purified, is supported by ab initio calculations of the energies of the three lowest excited states of monomeric H2SO4. The electronic-structure calculations indicate that the lowest excited state is not accessible by single-photon absorption for light of wavelengths >150 nm. This limit includes a generous allowance for error; the calculated energy of the transition corresponds to a wavelength <120 nm. Previous observations of photoluminescence and photo-oxidation of CO in sulphuric acid aerosols are attributed to multiphoton processes, caused by internal focusing of the incident light by the aerosol droplets. This finding does not rule out the occurrence of significant photochemistry of sulphuric acid aerosols in the stratospheres of the Earth and Venus, because of the likely presence of transition-metal ions as impurities in the atmospheric aerosols. ©1999 Elsevier Science S.A. On the copper oxide neutral cluster distribution in the gas phase: detection through 355 nm and 193 nm multiphoton and 118 nm single photon ionization.
The distribution of neutral copper oxide clusters in the gas phase created by laser ablation is detected and characterized through time-of-flight mass spectroscopy (TOFMS). The neutral copper oxide clusters are ionized by two different approaches: Multiphoton absorption of 355 and 193 nm radiation; and single photon absorption of 118 nm radiation. Based on the observed cluster patterns as a fun...
متن کاملLaser-induced photochemistry of methane on Pt(111): Excitation mechanism and dissociation dynamics
Adsorption states and photochemistry of methane and deuterated methane on a Pt~111! surface have been investigated by measuring temperature-programmed desorption spectra, x-ray photoelectron spectra, work function changes, and angle-resolved time-of-flight distributions of desorbed species. Methane weakly adsorbed on the Pt~111! surface at 40 K is dissociated to methyl and hydrogen fragments wi...
متن کاملRaman Study of the Photochemistry of Maleic Acid Adsorbed on the Surface of Colloidal Silver
The surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) spectra of maleic (cis; 2-butaneoic acid) and fumaric (trans; 2-butaneoic acid) acids adsorbed on aqueous silver sol particles are reported. These two acids form two groups of isomers which differ only in the relative positions of the two carboxylate groups. The photochemistry of maleic and fumaric acids adsorbed on the surface of silver colloids...

This work presents density, spectroscopic temperature, and shockwave measurements of laser induced breakdown plasma in atmospheric air by subthreshold intensity 5.5 109 W /cm2 193 nm laser radiation. Using molecular spectroscopy and two-wavelength interferometry, it is shown that substantial ionization 1016 cm−3 occurs that is not predicted by collisional cascade CC breakdown theory. While the ...
